  1. Daveomatic says:

I have a Zumo 550 and it is with interest that I helped a friend install the Zumo 660. After two road trips in the car and work with the 660 I have some points of comparison to my 550.

I preached my journal because it is based on 660 Firmware Update 3. 20 which was released in late July 2009.

    1. The 660 does not show all the street names when navigating on the map. I found my home with friends and where? button and showed the house, but no street names (including the street name) that surround his house. Zoom level, never mind.

    2. Do not follow the path that is specified in the download location custom MapSource. The 660 will recalculate the route to download, so there is no guarantee that the path you enter on your computer will be followed by 660. We really used to using waypoints.

    3. The construction of the 660 is like a nuvi. In fact, I think it’s a nuvi changed. The USB connection on the 660 can be accessed by removing the battery cover (which then causes an annoying message appears that the battery cover is off) There is no attack on the cover, so if you lose You know what? All GPS functions are disabled! The 660 only works with the GPS with the lid of the battery connected. The screen feels like plastics soft. In comparison, the USB connection on the 550 is behind a hinged door, and no matter if the door is open or closed. So even if you break the door, the 550 still works like a GPS. The screen 550 feels like glass to me. In my opinion – form and finishing – the 550 is built like a brick house, the 660 – not much.

    4. The 660 does not come with a 120V AC charger as the 550 does. Both 660 and 550 is charged via the USB connection, but if you plan a trip with the 660, you have a limited amount of battery, because if you connect the USB cable for charging that – you go in fashion USB Mass Storage. The 550 works like a GPS connected to a 12v source (car or bike cradle), or 120V AC (home or your hotel room.)

5 . The 660 uses a micro-SD card. Blimey! have seen how small? The size of a fingernail Pinky. The 550 uses a standard SD card is easy to manage. The SD card 550 can be inserted into the slot for PC cards and read as a floppy disk. Easy and convenient to do so. The micro-SD card is so damn small and difficult to reach (you must remove the battery to get 660 for it) is hardly worthwhile.

    6. He never saw the warning function of changing lanes. It seems that none of the interchanges on the highway that we have been programmed in the past 660.

    7. Even on maximum volume car, the internal speaker 660 was barely audible. This is a serious problem. You need a car on two out to hear music in the 660 through its internal speaker for use in assembling the machine. The assembly speaker 550 external drive gives you plenty of volume and can be heard over other noises in the car.

    8. 660 does not change the screen / flip / Page button, like the 550. You can switch between screens by pressing the button in the window on the side of 550 times. I find it a useful tool for navigating the system. I could not find a key or equivalent to 660 to do the same thing.

    9. For the 550 – to transform miles of Part XX of the map to the NAV screen, the camera incorporates the latest verbal instructions again. I could not find a key or an equivalent process on the 660 make this task easier.

    10. It may not matter to you, but the 660 is built to work with the XM radio and weather. One of the few things that do not support. 550 XM Weather and support if you get the GPX 30 antennas and provide the subscription service.

    CONCLUSION:
I still believe that, after reaching the two units out of 550 riders is a true GPS, it does everything I ask him. The 660 can be, but as has been said elsewhere, which issued until all the bugs were attracted by it. He needs to work.

And ‘interesting to me that Garmin is to play on the field with 660, the 550 is still a product catalog, and is still being sold at authorized dealers more. I do not know if they intend to phase out the 550 if and when more than 660 are on sale.

I know I am very happy with my Garmin 550 for hours and watch to see what updates the firmware to address the shortcomings of the 660.

07-15-2009 Since Amazon does not have this unit sold new. There is only one seller of the unit and is listed as refurbished.

7-31-2009 of the Amazon took this item out of the product catalog. Not currently available.

Garmin has released version 2 of the software. 80 for the Zumo 660. Update Member issues raised in previous reviews and corrects them. Kudos to Garmin to recognize the shortcomings above, and therefore the concerns addressed in an update of software. It’s always good to remember the failings of a company responding, or I do not know if there is something wrong.

I currently own three Garmin street pilot bought 4 years ago bought a nüvi 6 months ago, and now the Zumo 660 for my bike. The Zumo is obviously one of the more expensive GPS units that a consumer can buy. E ‘by far the best screen updated and accurate GPS I have. Beats the 6-month old Nuvi by far. Recently, I drove (not mounted on 660 for the bike yet, wanted to test drive) from central New Jersey to Baltimore. If the display is Garmin’s windshield, I could use the screen, which is fast and accurate. Service Lane Assist takes all the thinking to understand a path that would cross Interstate Lane. It was as if the 660 has a flash of light in front of me and was on the screen. In verifying the accuracy of this unit, I discovered that I too was looking at the Garmin and no traffic, because I was astonished at the accuracy of the passages of the river, the bridge over the service road parallel cons highway to see if the Garmin picked up the subtle differences, made of 100%.

I can now use the included software to plan a route with the POI and see how it behaves. With the software upgrade, Garmin leave if there is a shortage, because I know that you listen.

So far, I would recommend this unit and I think the addition of cable traffic for the next trip.

  3. R. Yara says:

I’m going on a journey of 10 days from the bike Bay Area to Colorado and back. So I decided to get the newly released Garmin Zuno 660 to replace my TomTom Easy Rider. I received last week, the unit and began using it in my car when I did the wiring for my 1200GS. The device is manufactured, the touchscreen is very responsive and easy to understand user interface to navigate. I also downloaded the latest version of mapping software, a free service, once the update offered by Garmin.

Set up is simple and to download the updated map of North America was good, if not the fact that it is a 2. 7 GB of files! I use a Mac and mapping software for Mac works well, a bit like the PC version. Creating custom locations on the Mac and download to the Zumo is simple. So far so good. I spent the weekend exploring the Zumo, including navigating the map. Then I noticed that the Zumo does not show names of cities, regardless of zoom level. Not the largest city, not the smallest, only street names. I called Garmin support and they confirmed that the Nuvi does not support the city names on the cards, saying the city can be found by searching by name, if you want to find a city. Garmin can not say when or if this function is supported! Unfortunately, I like to watch a mapi I see where the city or cities to each other and other points of interest and selection of appropriate channels. Thus, a city map with names of cities is not a card!

Garmin emphasized that cities can be located by the search function. Unfortunately, Portland Oregon or Portland, Maine, or something Portland has returned “Not Found”! Small towns like chalk CO returned “Not found”.

Finally, I tried creating a custom location, which proved to be simple and direct. I created waypoints on my Mac, downloaded the Zumo and created a custom location. Once again, the Zumo let me down, but was not able to complete the route calculation, hanging only by less than 100% calculated.

I think the Zumo has the potential to be a very good motorcycle GPS unit. I also think that Garmin has done a disservice by releasing the drive before it is cooked! Thus, the only star. In fact, I want to give a rating of zero stars for this unit is not yet ready for commercial release and review.

05/08/09 Update: It must have been a “driver error on my part, the search for” city “works for Portland or any city / town, Contrary to what I reported (I do not know why or what I did wrong time first). In addition, Garmin has now recognized a problem with maps showing the city / town names . According to their tech support is working on a fix, but do not have a release date.

Create a personalized itinerary for the drive works fine except for a freak: I do can not allow the unit to calculate a route that passes over Tioga Pass Road (Highway I am preparing for an upcoming trip to Colorado), suspended when calculating the route and did not finish. Another stroke head the unit does not allow me to add a custom path Ely Nevada by “City,” just as I Ely Twp, MI as an option when typing in Ely. It turns out that Ely NV is also my plans to visit Colorado.

  4. I just returned from a trip to bike 7 days, If I have to use the Zumo 660 to give a fair review.
-The screen is bright enough to read in almost all circumstances, even when sunglasses on a sunny day. The only time I could not see the screen has been corrected in the direct sunlight with the sun shining directly into the camera over the shoulder. This was one issuee Seldon. = Screen 5 stars.
-The MP3 player has been generally good, but lacked an equalizer. This is particularly a problem on a bike that drowns the noise of the wind down. An equalizer is definitely a software problem, so there is no excuse for not being a unit of $ 800. MP3 Player = 3 stars
mapping software that comes with the camera is generally easy to use, and routes are easy to load into the Zumo.
Mapping Software = 4-stars for the vehicle that comes with it works well. I used the camera in the car, almost as much as my bike. Automotive mount = 5 stars
routing, directions, etc. are good. And sometimes directly by a goat trail, or tell you to go right, then make a U-turn mile and a half later. I can only imagine the complexity of writing this software, so I’m not Ding mark too hard. And “as good as any unit I’ve used (which is not much), but not perfect, where the streets are a bit” complicated. Routing = 4 stars
Lane Assist only not seem to do anything. In all the miles I covered in this unit has never said that to be ongoing, and I could use help in more than one occasion. Can be it only works in certain cities. As far as I know, is a totally useless if you can even call something that does not function. Lane Assist = 1 star, zero stars if zero is a legal assessment.
“I love the fact that there are two field selectable by the user who appear on the map at the main screen. This is a feature that pushed me to buy this GPS. For example, when I’m driving in the mountains, I would like to know the height, so I can put a show constantly rising. In sum, there may be 20 items to choose from, such as speed , time to next turn, arrival time, etc., user-selectable fields = 5 stars
-One thing that really bothers is that the cities are not seen on the GPS. You may be rolling down the street and suddenly you’re in a town without even knowing that you approach one. A-GPS is a moving map, and when people look at the cards looking for two things: roads and cities. How can you have no city shows up? It’s really amazing to see how Garmin could make such a basic error. None of computer engineers, technicians, businessmen, etc. Never in the car and try it? Managers need to introduce this. There is no justification for this type of default on a $ 800 GPS. I used an el cheapo $ 100 Nexstar GPS showing the city. If you touch the screen, then zoom in or out just for the right zoom level, cities will be visible, with some effort you can find information, but you should not do that. I hope this will be corrected in a future updated firmware. Lack of City = 0 stars, but 0 stars is not permitted.
“I do not use Bluetooth, so I can not comment on any of these characteristics.” br />-What I bought through Amazon, as usual, did an excellent job.

In general I am very pleased with this unit but Garmin really needs to solve the problem of the city.

  5. This was my first GPS. MapSource is very confusing to get up and running. You receive a CD with what has been assumed Mapsource, but not when the CD did not say that. He also said that it is necessary to insert a 6-digit code of the CD cover that I have ever found. After emailing Garmin support on several occasions, I realized that actually download the last card and a MapSource Freebee once and the 6-digit code given to you is uploaded. It was a large file of 2 gigabytes. Once downloaded, the software was very good. You update the GPS with the latest map too. I have started to create waypoints and routes very quickly. I planned my trip around Arkansas in a few hours. GPS is great. Very friendly. E ‘beautifully installed on my Electraglide.

Update I continued my journey personalized itineraries and Arkansas did not work at all. I have spoken several times before being admitted Garmin there was a problem with custom locations. Basically, this feature was useless, my journey. I had to resort to the direction stick on my windshield. As for traveling to a city / state or address / city / state, it worked great. I can not believe that Garmin does not test the equipment on the ground before putting on the market.

Update 7/14/09 – Garmin has released an updated firmware (3. 10) 660. It seems that fixed all the problems with paths. I do not know of any problems that I have left. This is a very good unit. A note, the USB ports on the car and the cradle of the cycle does not download to the unit. You can use the USB port inside the battery compartment for interfacting with a PC and MapSource.
